“Houses exposed to the elements required strong foundations.” Quaker William Penn
Learning practical knowledge is crucial if you want to grow a successful business. However, if you don’t have the right mindset and the correct mental toolkit to go with it, it will all be nought: just like building a house without foundations.
Here are the 5 most influential books that formed my foundations as I navigated my journey from apathetic employee to Untamed Entrepreneur.
The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod
As the phrase goes “win the morning, win the day”. This book was by far the most influential for me as I transitioned out of my lowest ebb to being energised and inspired. No more snoozing, arriving at work later and feeling guilty. Get up early, create a purposeful morning routine and take control of the first hour of your day. It’s easy, can be done right away, costs nothing (except for the price of the book) and can genuinely change your life!
Secrets Of A Millionaire Mind by T Harv Eker
Did you know that we all have our own ‘money blueprint’ and that no matter what we do, unless our blueprint changes, over the long run our wealth will stay the same. Have you ever wondered why so many lottery winners are back to square one within a few years? Their bank balance changed but their money blueprint did not! If you want to achieve lasting financial success and have a healthy attitude towards money, this book is a must.
Rich Dad Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert Kiyosaki
I know this is not exactly an original suggestion and many of you will be familiar with this books lessons but for the uninitiated and those with an ‘employee’ mindset, this book will force you to think differently -and bigger. No longer does trading time for money seem a viable route to wealth; the conventional notions of what safety and security mean are turned upside down; and the idea of what represents an asset and a liability in your life are questioned. In a nutshell after reading this book you will start to think like an entrepreneur.
The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss
I know, another unoriginal suggestion but this list is a reflection of the books that impacted ME and this book sure as hell did that. Some of the most impactful concepts I ever learnt were picked up in this book: The 80/20 Principle (for more on this read a previous Untamed Article here); the value in outsourcing; and the importance of the people you spend time with are just a couple! The practical advice may be somewhat dated but the themes live long.
Start With Why by Simon Sinek
One of the core tenets of my approach is the idea of designing a business that aligns with your purpose -or why. I comment ad-nauseum on the plethora of entrepreneurs who set up a business with no real reason behind their decision, beyond ‘making money’ or ‘doing it because my mates did it’. For the vast majority, creating a business that doesn’t inspire you and is not connected to a deeper mission or purpose is the fastest route to failure. Simon Sinek does an amazing job reminding us of not only the importance of being purposeful in our businesses, but in communicating our WHY before all else.
If you have read these and would like some more suggestions for books that could change your life, please let me know...I have a long list :)
